Calls on nations to take stronger action against threats to global security
U.S. President Donald Trump has called for greater respect for national sovereignty and urged nations to unite against threats to humanity, while highlighting the persecution of Christians around the world. Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump also criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its authority over sovereign nations.
Trump condemned the persecution of Christians by what he described as repressive regimes and called on nations to take stronger action against threats to global security. He also emphasized that countries should retain authority over their own laws and affairs rather than submit to institutions he believes undermine national sovereignty.
On the ICC, Trump called on member states to withdraw from the court, saying the United States would not accept its jurisdiction over American service members. His address placed national sovereignty, religious persecution and resistance to international institutions at the center of his message to world leaders.
