Xi Jinping Announces New Plan to Bring 100,000 Young Americans to China

Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced a new initiative to invite 100,000 young Americans to China over the next five years for study and cultural exchange programmes, as Beijing seeks to deepen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Xi made the announcement during his state visit to the United States, emphasizing the role of young people in shaping the future of China-U.S. relations. The initiative builds on an earlier programme launched in 2023 to welcome 50,000 young Americans to China for exchanges and study. That target was reached ahead of schedule, with more than 50,000 young Americans having participated by mid-2026.

The new five-year plan is expected to expand opportunities for educational and cultural engagement between young people from both nations. The initiative comes as Washington and Beijing continue discussions on trade, technology and other areas of bilateral relations, while also seeking greater contact between their citizens.
