The move comes as renewed U.S.-Iran hostilities continue to heighten concerns over regional security, international trade and energy markets.
Peru has severed diplomatic relations with Iran, citing concerns over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, disruptions to international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and what Lima described as deteriorating democratic and human-rights conditions in Iran.
In announcing the decision, Peru’s Foreign Ministry accused Tehran of contributing to regional instability and restricting maritime traffic through the strategic waterway, with potential consequences for energy prices and global supply chains.
Lima also criticized Iran over alleged repression of peaceful protests, restrictions on press freedom, discrimination against women and girls, and the obstruction of international nuclear inspections. Despite the diplomatic break, Peru said consular relations will remain in place to protect the interests and rights of Peruvian and Iranian citizens, in accordance with international agreements.
