His 53-year-old son, will become Norway's new king, Haakon VIII
Norway's King Harald, a reformer who emerged from the shadow of his well-loved, extrovert father, with more than three decades on the throne, died on Friday August 28, at Oslo University Hospital, at the age of 89.
The royal palace said on its website, that King Harald, who was also Europe's oldest living monarch, was taken to the hospital on August 17. The palace said he was treated for a bacterial infection.
After his death was announced, hundreds of people converged at the palace in Oslo, to lay flowers.
The government also declared nationwide mourning until after his funeral. Tributes have poured in from politicians and other European monarchs.
His 53-year-old son, will become Norway's new king, Haakon VIII, and Haakon's 22-year-old daughter Ingrid Alexandra, becomes the crowned princess.
