Singapore Offers $55,000 Per Child in a Bid to Boost Birth Rates

The measures came as Singapore’s fertility rate fell to a record low 0.87 children per woman in 2025

Singapore is rolling out a major package of financial and family-support measures, to encourage couples to have more children as the city-state confronts a rapidly ageing population.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, announced that families could receive nearly S$70,000 ($55,000) in direct support for each child, including payments at birth and towards further education. The government will also expand parental leave and provide additional housing support for families with children.

The measures came as Singapore’s fertility rate fell to a record low 0.87 children per woman in 2025, far below the 2.1 replacement level. The country is expected to become a “super-aged” society this year, with more than 21% of its population aged 65 or older.

While Wong acknowledged that financial incentives alone may not reverse the trend, he said the government would continue supporting families, while maintaining immigration as part of its strategy to address population ageing and a shrinking younger workforce.
