Bill Expected to Extradite Criminal Suspects to Mainland China for Trial
The United Nations through the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet has asked the authorities in Hong King to consult broadly and widely before passing an extradition bill in the region. The bill, which was suspended by the Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, is supposed to allow criminal suspects in the former British colony to be extradited to Mainland China for trial. The High Commissioner commended the leadership of Hong King for suspending the passage of the bill as a response to the different forms of activism displayed by a large proportion of the population. The different demonstrations from different groups as a result of the bill is seen to be the greatest popular challenge ever faced by President Xi Jinping since he took office in 2012.
