Should Eskom be split with private enterprises playing a role in its recovery, or must the government invest more money to keep the utility afloat?
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa announced that the utility would be split into the individual entities responsible for power generation, transmission and distribution. This he stated while delivering his "State of the Nation Address". Cosatu staged a nation wide protest last week against this move with the argument that, such a move will lead to the privatization of Eskom, the power utility and job cuts. Labor unions expect better clarification on the impact of the split on jobs.
