He called for closer examination of the mortality trends and the factors that may have contributed to them
Canadian scientist Denis Rancourt has drawn attention to an increase in reported pregnancy-related deaths in the United States between 2020 and 2022, presenting mortality data during proceedings of the Allison Inquiry in Ottawa.
Rancourt pointed to the timing of the increase, which occurred during the period when COVID-19 vaccination programmes, including vaccination efforts involving pregnant women, were being rolled out in the United States.
He called for closer examination of the mortality trends and the factors that may have contributed to them. The presentation has added to ongoing discussion about changes in maternal mortality during the pandemic period.
