The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India says the measure is designed to discourage unhealthy eating habits among children
India is moving closer to restricting the sale of foods high in fat, salt and sugar within 50 metres of schools as authorities seek to address rising childhood obesity. The proposed regulation could affect shops, restaurants and food vendors operating near the country’s 1.5 million schools.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India says the measure is designed to discourage unhealthy eating habits among children and encourage food companies to reformulate products. The proposal follows the publication of thresholds for fat, salt and sugar content, with public feedback open until October 6.
The proposed restrictions have raised concerns among retailers and food industry groups, who warn that businesses near schools could suffer significant losses. However, authorities point to growing childhood obesity and experiences in countries such as Chile, where stricter food regulations have been linked to reduced consumption and reformulation of products.
