More than 50 Christians have faced prosecution in recent years
Twelve Christians have been arrested during a worship service in Algeria, in a fresh incident highlighting the mounting pressure on believers and Christian worship in the nation. The worshipers were detained by special police forces who raided a worship gathering at the House of Refuge shelter near Oran. Christian literature, mobile phones and identity cards were reportedly seized, while the detainees were taken for questioning.
The Christians could face prosecution under Algeriaโs laws regulating non-Muslim worship. The arrests come amid longstanding restrictions on Christian churches and believers in Algeria. Open Doors reports that nearly all 47 churches affiliated with the Protestant Church of Algeria have received closure orders or been sealed, while more than 50 Christians have faced prosecution in recent years. Algeria ranked 20th on the 2026 World Watch List.
The Church must stand strong against persecution and continue to pray fervently for Christians in Algeria and for persecuted believers across the nations. Pray for their protection, strength and boldness, and that every opposition to the Gospel will be overcome. The Gospel must prevail, and the name of Jesus must be proclaimed in every nation!
