Nigeria labor unions threaten to go on strike if government does not review minimum wage
The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC), its sister union, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as well as the United Labor Congress threatened to embark on a strike action on Tuesday 6th November, if the government of Nigeria fails to respond to the demands of workers to increase the minimum wage.
According to the NLC President, Ayuba Wada, minimum wage should be negotiated by stake holders (organized labor, employers of labor, and the government) and not offered because it is not an award. Organized labor’s original demand is 66,500-naira minimum wage for the Nigerian worker. Although Labor reached a compromise with the government and accepted 30,000 naira which has still not been endorsed and implemented by the government.
