Worship Continues: Zanzibar Christians Hold Firm Amid Rising Persecution

Christians in Zanzibar and other coastal regions of Tanzania are continuing to gather for worship despite growing threats, harassment and attacks on churches, according to Christian advocacy organizations. Reports indicate that some churches have been vandalized, while congregations have faced intimidation and social pressure, particularly in Muslim-majority communities.

Beyond attacks on Church buildings, Christian groups say congregations can face difficulties registering Churches, establishing new places of worship and conducting Christian activities openly. Converts to Christianity may also experience ostracism, harassment or threats from families and wider communities.

Despite these challenges, Christian leaders say believers continue to worship and call for greater protection from authorities. Advocacy groups maintain that while Tanzania's laws guarantee freedom of worship, stronger enforcement is needed to ensure Christians in Zanzibar and other coastal communities can freely practice their faith.
