U.S.-Iran Hostilities Escalate After Month-long Pause

The renewed fighting has raised fresh concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz

Military tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated, after more than a month without direct attacks between the two sides.

The U.S. military said it struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on August 30, claiming the launchers were preparing to deploy sea mines that could threaten international shipping. Iran said the strikes killed military personnel and civilians.

Iran subsequently retaliated by launching ballistic missiles towards U.S. military positions in Jordan, and targeting American forces in the United Arab Emirates. Jordan said it intercepted eight missiles, while the UAE reported intercepting drones over its territorial waters.

The renewed fighting has raised fresh concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route, and threatens to undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring a ceasefire in the region. Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian has indicated that Tehran remains open to returning to the June ceasefire agreement if Washington does the same.
