President Jair Bolsonaro's decree for citizens to own guns gets Brazilians talking
Brazil's new president, Jair Bolsonaro immediately swings into action with a decree making it easy for Brazilian citizens to own private guns. According to the decree, a single individual has the right to own four guns. The president says this is to allow Brazilians defend themselves against c assaults. Reacting to the decree, Julita Lemgruber, Coordinator of the Center of Citizenship and Security at Candido Mendes University, said this decree very clearly opens the way for violence in the countryside. According to her, this is an expansion of a license to kill that was not seen before. In line with this decree, a wide range of categories of people living in Brazil are permitted to own guns ranging from rural to urban dwellers, hunters etc., especially those living in places with high level of homicide. The president, however made it clear that conditions such as not having a criminal record, taking a psychological test, being at least 25 years old amongst others are attached to an individual's eligibility to owning a fire arm.
