COVID-19: Civil Society Groups in Nigeria Stand against Proposed Infectious Disease Bill

Bill seen as undemocratic and unacceptable by civil society groups

Civil Society groups in Nigeria have come out in solidarity to stand against a proposed Infectious Disease bill which has currently gone through a second reading in the legislature. The groups cried out on the tyrannical aspects of the bill which accrued so much power to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF). Leaders of the groups, condemned the bill in its entirety stating that every aspect of the bill is gloomy and doesn’t speak the heart of the citizens of the nation. It would be recalled that Nigeria’s House of Representatives led by its Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila had earlier tried to hurriedly pass an infectious disease bill into law and this has caused much controversy in the nation.
