Alberta, Canada Passes Bill Preventing LGBTQ Flags From Classrooms

Alberta government says the purpose of the legislation is to strengthen neutrality in schools

Alberta, one of Canada’s 10 provinces, has passed legislation addressing the display of flags and other symbols in publicly funded schools. The Legislation, Bill 25, an Act to remove Politics and Ideology from Classrooms, and amend the Education Act 2026, was introduced in the Alberta Legislature on March 31, 2026.

It passed the third reading on May 13, 2026, and received Royal Assent on May 14, 2026, completing the legislative process. Under the new framework, school authorities will generally be required to display only the Canadian flag and the Alberta flag unless other flags are specifically permitted through regulations.

The policy is significant because it means that flags representing particular political, ideological, or identity movements, including the LGBTQ, will not automatically be permitted as permanent symbols in classrooms under the new rules.
