The forum comes as BRICS seeks a larger role in the global economy
The BRICS Business Forum opened in New Delhi on Friday, September 11, bringing together government officials and business leaders from the expanded BRICS grouping as India hosts the bloc’s 18th summit. The forum is setting the stage for discussions on trade, investment, technology, supply chains and stronger economic cooperation among member states.
India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal called on BRICS nations to open their markets further, reduce non-tariff trade barriers and connect their payment systems to facilitate smoother trade. He also promoted greater use of local currencies and highlighted opportunities for startups and women-led businesses across the bloc.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also addressed the forum, emphasizing the need for greater economic resilience amid global instability. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening supply chains, digitalization, technology, investment and practical mechanisms for expanding trade among BRICS economies.
The forum comes as BRICS seeks a larger role in the global economy. The expanded grouping now comprises 11 full members and represents nearly half of the world’s population and about 40% of global economic output measured by purchasing power parity.
The forum precedes the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12–13 in New Delhi with global leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expected to participate.
The gathering comes as BRICS seeks to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen its influence in the global economy amid geopolitical and economic challenges.
