The sell-off reflects growing investor concerns.
AI-linked stocks fell sharply across global markets on September 14 after leading AI executives called for a slowdown in the development of increasingly powerful artificial-intelligence systems, citing growing safety concerns.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged the industry to “pace the frontier,” while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI chief Elon Musk backed calls for greater caution. Altman also said OpenAI will not proceed with an IPO this year, citing safety concerns.
OpenAI investor SoftBank plunged more than 13% at one point in Japan, while SK Hynix, Samsung, TSMC and other semiconductor companies also declined. The sell-off reflects growing investor concerns that tighter safety measures or a slowdown in frontier-AI development could affect the enormous spending on AI chips and data centres.
